Across nearly 500 published InspectMind case studies, the median construction project surfaces 87 issues in an AI plan check, with an average of about 175. Counts range from a single issue on small sets to 5,199 on the largest project reviewed. As a working rule of thumb, an AI review finds roughly 70 issues per 100 drawing sheets. These benchmarks are drawn from real projects, not estimates.
Issues found per project
- Median: 87 issues per project
- Average: ~175 issues per project
- Range: 1 to 5,199 issues
- Rule of thumb: ~70 issues per 100 sheets
The median (87) is well below the average (175) because a handful of very large, multi- discipline sets pull the average up. For a typical permit set, the median is the more useful expectation.
Distribution by issue count
How nearly 500 published case studies break down by the number of issues found:
- 1–10 issues: 26 projects
- 11–25 issues: 45 projects
- 26–50 issues: 75 projects
- 51–100 issues: 126 projects
- 101–200 issues: 109 projects
- 201–500 issues: 91 projects
- 501–1,000 issues: 14 projects
- 1,000+ issues: 11 projects
Over 80% of projects land between 10 and 500 issues. Sets above 1,000 issues are almost always large, multi-building or multi-discipline submissions.
Which disciplines drive the most issues?
In the case-study corpus, structural and architectural drawings appear most frequently, followed by electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and civil. Many of the most expensive findings are not within a single discipline at all — they are cross-discipline coordination conflicts (duct vs. structure, fixtures vs. plan, panel clearances) that only surface when every discipline is reviewed against the others.
- Structural plan check
- Architectural drawing review
- MEP coordination review
- Civil plan check
- Fire & life safety review
Why a high issue count is good news
Finding more issues before construction is the goal, not a red flag. Fixing a problem in design is roughly 10x cheaper than fixing it in the field, where the same conflict becomes an RFI, a change order, or rework. A thorough pre-submission review that surfaces 200 issues you can resolve on paper is far cheaper than discovering a fraction of them after the concrete is poured.

How these benchmarks were measured
Figures are aggregated from InspectMind's published case studies — real construction document sets reviewed by the platform, each with a verifiable issue count and evidence for every finding. Across the broader platform, InspectMind has reviewed 2,800+ projects for 500+ companies. Benchmarks vary with discipline mix, design stage, and set quality, and are provided as general guidance.
